The Rhythm and Blues Quartet met Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records, when performing in Birmingham in 1964. This meeting completely changed the lives of Steve Winwood, Muff Winwood, Spencer Davis and Peter York. Blackwell became their manager and The Spencer Davis Group was born.

Although the band's first releases were faithful R&B covers, they quickly developped their own unique sound during the 3 years Steve Winwood was the band's lead guitarist and vocalist.
